On Friday, September 12, 2014, The GRAMMY Museum unveiled its newest special display, Oh Say Can You Sing: ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in Popular Music. Residing on the Museum’s third floor, the display celebrates 200 years of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Including Whitney Houston’s jumpsuit worn during her famous Welcome Home Heroes with Whitney Houston performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” in 1991, sheet music from arrangements by Rickey Minor, instruments and more, the display is a contemporary exploration of our national anthem, originally penned by Francis Scott Key in 1814. Visitors can also enjoy video footage of Jimi Hendrix’s iconic performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” from Woodstock 1969. Oh Say Can You Sing: ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in Popular Music is on display for a limited time, closing October 12, 2014.
In addition to the display, the GRAMMY Museum has created educational programs for both students and educators, encouraging both to explore a different side of popular music and culture.
